The 2008 Viognier, Santa Barbara County has our classic full mouth feel and a clean, lingering finish. Continuing our string of great Viognier vintages, this wine has great acidity and correct varietal aromatics. It combines the fruit from two vineyards: Stolpman Vineyard fruit (22%) provided a lighter, floral-peach, mineral element to the wine. Bien Nacido Vineyard fruit (78%) adds body, glycerin, acid, and a burst of tropical and peach aromas. It was fermented in neutral, French barrels. (536 cases produced)

• Stolpman fruit harvested September 12, 23.0 Brix sugar, 3.2 pH
• Whole cluster pressed
• Cold settled before barreling and inoculation
• Assmanhausen and Prise de Mousse yeast used
• Half this wine completed ML fermentation in February
• Neutral French oak barrels used
• Wine remained on lees until finishing
• Lightly filtered, fined with non-fat milk
• Bottled April 11, 2009
• Released June 1, 2009

The 2009 Viognier, Santa Barbara County is again classic viognier in the Condrieu vein. This wine has great acidity and correct varietal aromatics. It combines the fruit from two vineyards: Refugio Vineyard fruit (23%) provided a lighter, floral-peach, mineral element to the wine. Bien Nacido Vineyard fruit (77%) adds body, glycerin, acid, and a burst of tropical and peach aromas. It was fermented in neutral, French barrels. (762 cases produced)

Bien Nacido (Davis 1 and Alban clones) harvested Sep 28 at 23.9 Brix, 3.2 pH

Refugio fruit harvested Sep 22 and 24 at 23.4-23.8 Brix, 3.8 pH

Whole cluster pressed

Cold settled before barreling and inoculation

All barrels completed malolactric fermentation

Neutral French oak barrels used

Wine remained on lees until finishing

Viognier is the exotic alternative to Chardonnay. It's full and flowery, with unique scents of apricot and clover. Some winemakers use it to make Syrah more interesting.

Food Pairing: Typically lighter fare - non-meat appetizers or entrees, egg rolls, fish or chicken. This wine pairs well with seafood - lobster, sole, shellfish. I prefer Viognier paired with clean flavors, fruitful sauces, butter/herb sauces, or light spicing. I don't recommend it with highly spiced or powerfully flavored foods. Try crab cakes, gumbo, or corn chowder for something wonderful and different.
